Originally the second largest depot in the Sydney tramway system, the abandoned Rozelle Tram Depot was lovingly restored in meticulous detail by Mirvac Retail. The iconic building was transformed from its derelict state into a European-style market space that brings together some of Sydney’s most iconic restaurants and cult food providores.
We gladly immersed ourselves in researching the golden era of Sydney’s public transport system and uncovered a wealth of visual and thematic detail to inform our design approach. The unique chamfered-edged typography on the original scrolls used to indicate each tram’s destination was refined and incorporated into the logotype, as was its distinctive stitching. Symbols, colours, graphic devices and typography were all informed by relic materials of Sydney trams.
We are very proud to have been involved with the restoration of such an historic building, which received a National Trust Heritage Award for Adaptive Reuse in bringing it back to life by history, architecture and community.
